SPECIAL GUEST Jai Sally-Carrington is coming to Chu Chu Chinatown to teach a very unique animal teapot workshop!
Beginners are welcome, even those very new to clay!

The ultra talented sculptor Jai will lead students through building their own functional sculptural teapot in the form of an animal. These animal teapots will be first built as solid forms, then hollowed out and reassembled as functional teapots. They will be going over techniques to make sure the teapots function properly.
Day 1:
Sat May 23 - 12-4pm
On the first day Jai will begin with a demonstration, and everyone will start their teapots as solid animal forms.
Day 2:
Sat May 30 - 12-4pm
On day 2, everyone will hollow out the teapots and add any final details onto the animals such as fur texture and a handle.
Day 3:
Approximately late June (the final underglaze/glaze day will be determined after the bisque is complete, there will be several dates to choose from including Saturdays)
On day 3, you will join Serena to paint underglaze onto your bisqued teapot to add colour and more textures with brushes and sponges. You will then dip your entire pot into clear glaze.

1. Jai will help everyone through the making steps, so that by the end of this workshop everyone will have a completed a functional animal teapot, ready to be dried and fired.
2. All materials included: clay, underglazes, clear glaze, and 2 kiln firings. You will be provided tools to borrow during the workshop.
3. Day 1 and 2 dates are fixed, you must be able to make both classes. Day 3 will be determined after the bisque firing, however it is flexible and you will be notified with the drop-in schedule, please inquire with Serena if you have any questions classes@chuchu.ca.

About the Artist
Jai Sallay-Carrington is a figurative ceramic sculptor creating works about human identities, behaviour and emotions using anthropomorphic creatures. Reflecting on their queer and transgender identity, Jai creates sculptures which uplift 2SLGBTQIA+ communities as well as challenge and analyze the dominant heteronormative and cisgendered society.
They question the role that gender, sexuality and desire have in forming an individual’s character and placement within their culture. Jai’s sculptures speak to a feeling of otherness, not through visible physical traits, but through the hidden aspects of identity. These identities exist within, they are either shared or kept a secret. The zoomorphic qualities of their sculptures shed light on those human characteristics hidden from the naked eye.
As each animal comes with its own unique qualities, as well as the myths and stories associated with them, when anthropomorphized, their addition to the human form creates a deeper understanding of that individual’s persona and experiences. Jai’s sculptures work to normalize and celebrate those 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals who do not fit into those strict societal norms.
